In spite of the many hardships he might have faced in the past, be they personal or issues that had afflicted the entirety of his pack and beyond, Hawk was grateful. Many things had improved in recent months, most notably, he had met two others that he had come, rather quickly, to view as very good friends.
First was Maxem, the individual he had quite literally offered a shoulder to lean on during their initial meeting, before realizing just how much the younger pawn had to endure in his existence already. The ghost had made sure to be around for his friend as much as he could between patrols or other duties, while Maxem had healed from the injury he’d sustained. Then there was Athena, the pretty enigma of a Knight. Seemingly distant, but fiercely loyal. And, he’d discovered, in possession of a bit of a playful side. They had been friends before him, and they’d welcomed him to their little group.
For that, the ghost could not feel more grateful. With patrols and duties out of the way for the moment, Hawk opted to venture towards the fallen tree that the two of them appeared to frequently hang around, to see if either was present there for now. The ghost hoped he might find Maxem, to see how the other was faring and feeling.
The scent of his friend seemed fairly recent, so as he neared the area, Hawk called out gently. ”Maxem? Are you around?”

Maxem
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Molo
Maxem was still slacking from his duties, it made him feel good when the Rooks come to him to see if he could help scout their prey. Sure the hunting groups were bringing home prey-more often than not but most of their quarry wasn't as spectacular as it used to be. They brought home smaller morsels than usual and finally seemed to appreciate Maxem and his skill set, but instead of jumping at the chance to help them, he decided to let them suffer without him. But only for a little bit, he would resume his duties soon, but today was not it.
Athena was busy with whatever duties she had and he hadn't been able to find his new friend Hawk, much to his disappointment, so Maxem had headed to the small clearing and fallen tree on his own. He had lazed about, but quickly gotten bored, so naturally he tried to climb up a gnarled tree. Pulling himself into the branches strained his injured leg but he pushed past it, eventually getting half way up before finding a sturdy branch and laying on it, the branch thick enough to support his weight without breaking. He was about to close his eyes when a voice called out to him.
The earth toned brute looked down, seeing the snowy fur of the friend he had looked for earlier and smile grew on his face. "Yeah, just look up." He called down. "You know, I figured someone with a name like yours would always be searching the trees." He joked.

Based on the scent trails, the Knight was fairly certain his friend had ventured through here fairly recently. A quick, initial scan of the area did not reveal anything to indicate the presence of the other, though. At least, not until the other man spoke - his voice echoing down from somewhere.. above. That, and his words themselves, prompted the ghost to tilt his head upward, a wry smile formulating upon his countenance as the other spoke again.
”I don’t believe I’ve ever known anyone that climbed trees before, but you do make a fair point. I’ll be more vigilant, going forth,” Hawk promised with a facetious wink and a nod to himself and his friend. He supposed there was a note of seriousness to be had in there, though. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to look up, once in a while. Just in case, for it was a trick he could see actual instigators utilizing, as well.
”I’m glad to see you’re feeling better, too,” he added on, supposing that was the most important conclusion Hawk could draw from this. If Maxem was feeling well enough to be able to climb a tree, that had to be a very good sign. ”And it is good to see you again, my friend. I’m sorry I haven’t had more time to see you, lately.” But that was the purpose of today, to spend time with someone else. Friendships were as important as duties and patrols. Arguably, even more so, in many ways.

Maxem
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Molo As his friend spoke Maxem felt the grin as big as the Cheshire cats crossed his maw, Hawk was so serious and he enjoyed seeing a different side to him, his tail draped over the branch, swaying back and forth languidly . "There trees are like my second home so being injured sucked." He said and slowly gathered himself up and turned, carefully making his way down, hopping from branch to branch until he was close enough to jumped to the ground, though he winced, his previously injured leg twinged with pain, but it faded as he walked towards Hawk.
"Oh it's alright, I figured you were spending time with your girlfriend." He teased, curious to see if he could get under his friends skin with a teasing jab, though he hoped he wouldn't take it too seriously. "Though really, no hard feelings, life has a way of keeping us apart." He added, he was pleased that someone came to find him regardless.
"All jokes aside, what have you been up to?" He asked, curious if he really had been spending time with Athena or not, it would truly take someone special to pull her away from her duties.

Certainly, the other appeared much more upbeat than any time Hawk had seen him before, an enormous grin evidence of that. Maxem apparently considered the trees a second home, and his injury had prohibited him from enjoying that. ”I can imagine it did,” Hawk spoke with a note of sympathy. ”Still, an impressive feat. Do you think, perhaps, you could teach me?” He watched with intrigue as the question was posed. It would be a useful skill, he thought, though the ghost did feel a small bit of concern, as his packmate descended from the tree.
Thankfully Maxem made it down without incident, though the wince did not go unnoticed. The injury was still bothering him to some extent it seemed, although Maxem’s stride appeared normal. Probably just because of the jump, then. Also nice, was the fact that the other man didn’t seem at all bothered for the length of time between visits. His comment, however, almost immediately caused the Knight’s eyes to widen in surprise. The comment was clearly meant in jest, but.. was it just meant to tease or did Maxem actually think.. that? He did continue though, offering Hawk the excuse to stay silent a moment longer to contemplate an answer.
The whole relationship thing was.. not something the ghost could deny, though, because the idea had come to his mind, too - and he was not necessarily opposed to it. Taking a breath, Hawk tipped his head slightly. ”It does, sadly. Especially now. Athena and I.. actually did spend some time together, though, looking for water in the caves.” He admitted, wondering if she had mentioned that or not. ”How did you know about that?” he quipped back, flashing a wry smirk, supposing the question might reveal what he wanted to know, even if it was meant mostly in fun.

Maxem
Thoughts| "Spoken Word | Outside Speech | Molo
At the mention of teaching, Maxem cocked his head to the side. No one had asked him that before, not even the pups, though then again their small frames made him nervous and he tried to keep away from them. "You really want to learn? Then sure! Just if you end up breaking something I wasn't here." He joked, though even with his carefree voice, part of him could already imagine their pack blaming him if something was to happen to Hawk that put him out of commission for a while. Maxem was the perfect scapegoat.
He snickered at his friends reaction, happy to see some kind of reaction besides his usual calm demeanor . "Oh Hawk, my dearest friend, I know all, I see all, I hear all, but most importantly-" he leaned in, lowering his voice as if telling a secret, "I pretend and make false statements so that when someone falls for it and admits the truth, they can't take it back." The brown brute started to laugh, tail swishing back and forth. "But Athena had mentioned it in passing, but she's always so busy that I couldn't get much else out of her." He added.

Almost as soon as he had posed the question about learning to climb, Maxem looked stunned. It must not’ve been something he was asked about a lot, then - or a skill very few others knew he had. Either way that was unfortunate and a bit saddening. He did, however, seem eager to share the skill, provided Hawk didn’t end up breaking something.
The ghost smiled a little at that. ”I would like to. Maybe, somewhere easier, though. Since.. you know, I’m not quite as suited for that sort of thing.” With his weight, the Knight supposed he would be more likely to break any tree branches he were to try standing on, if they weren’t big enough, which was something he was sure both of them preferred to avoid.
However, the second question appeared to humor Maxem. And as the other admitted his secret, Hawk couldn’t help but to join him in the laughter, giving his head a little bow in mock shame at how easily he’d been fooled. ”A clever strategy. Fortunately for me, there’s nothing I’d take back, this time. I do like Athena,” the Knight admitted with a wry smile, taking a moment to catch his breath and let the amusement wear down a bit.
”That was.. actually something that I.. wanted to ask you about. If you thought.. someone like me has any chance with her.” He supposed it was as good a time as any to get into that, finally, even if he did somewhat regret moving the conversation toward a more serious topic for the moment. Hopefully, though, his friend could help sort out these very weird feelings.

I know I always come and go Maxem tried to hold back the excitement from the idea of teaching Hawk how to climb, he was already thinking about where he could take the other to learn, he knew the area around the den site like the back of his hand, but he still had to take time to think. "Give me a minute, I'm sure I can find the perfect place." He could try the place where he had first started to climb, but they were already there. This clearing had become his home when he was young and he wasn't sure if any of these trees could support the much bigger male. They may have to move into the older forests to try, oh the possibilities!
Maxem was so consumed in his planning that he almost didn't notice the dip of his friends head. His grin widened, revealing his teeth, "I knew it!" He exclaimed, practically bouncing from paw to paw. "And my mom says that I'm not observant." He laughed under his breath.
"Someone like you?" Maxem stopped, grin slipping, "someone like you? Strong? Trustworthy? Nicer than he should be? I think out of everyone in the entire pack you're the only one who has a chance with her. She actually talks to you." He said, dumbfounded that his friend would second guess himself like this.

The ghost smiled a little and nodded, as his friend requested a moment to find the perfect place for this practice tree climbing session. From the look in Maxem’s eyes, though, he was clearly looking forward to this. For a moment, Hawk wondered what exactly he had gotten himself into with this, but whatever happened, it would be worth it. For one, he’d have the chance he had wanted to spend time with a friend, and secondly, maybe he’d learn a new skill, too. That was worth it.
As much as he wanted to laugh about Maxem’s exclamation and follow up comment about observation, the ghost couldn’t quite bring himself too. Instead, he felt a little saddened that this man’s family seemed to have turned against him as they had. ”That.. doesn’t sound quite right. Your maneuverability, tact, and keen observation would make you a formidable scout, back where I’m from,” he chose to comment, hoping it would be encouraging for his friend. It wasn’t an official role here, but it was a part Maxem had mentioned partaking in, before. Perhaps that could be his role for the pack.
The ghost was very quickly caught off guard however, by the series of compliments paid to him by his friend. ”You.. really think all of that?” he murmured, wholly taken aback. It was of course how Hawk strived to portray himself, but to hear it, was an entirely different matter. Even more so as it related to Athena. He had a chance. Provided he didn’t mess it up by saying or doing something dumb and awkward.

I know I always come and go Hawk's praise made Maxem look away, "well here, it makes me a tool, but nothing good enough to raise me above a Pawn, I'm not strong or fast enough to be a full Rook," he trailed off for a moment before shaking off his fur-and his melancholy mood, throwing on his energetic face, "I still get to help out though! So that's better than nothing. Besides, I don't need to prove anything to my family, they're focused on each other, which means more time for me to go have fun." He said, thinking that if he was of a valuable rank he would constantly be working-boring! At least now he could point the hunts in the right direction then run off and explore, do whatever he wanted, though it didn't hide the small hole in his heart. If he didn't have a true purpose why would anyone want him? He may come off as childish but he still held a dream of finding someone who would love him for him and maybe have children. They could build their own happiness, but part of him ignored these desires so that he could avoid the disappointment when it didn't happen.
His friends question allowed him to continue ignoring his true desires. "If I didn't think that then why would I say it?" Maxem tilted his head and smiled, he leaned over, nudging his friends chin up with his nose. "Have more confidence dude, you're awesome." He grinned, though if anyone said this to him he would ignore it. "And I bet Athena thinks that too." He teased, he couldn't help himself, Hawk was so cool and collected that he kind of enjoyed being able to get under his skin and see his reaction.
"Now, if I do teach you how to climb, we have to make sure you don't break anything or else I think Athena will break my face." He joked. "And my face is the best part of my charm."

Maxem didn’t dwell on the negative for very long, but it was still long enough, and prevalent enough, to concern the ghost. He was glad at least though, that the other appeared to be seeing a positive to his situation as well - even if the thought of the disconnect between family in the same pack was just as saddening. ”That’s a good attitude. Every tool has a purpose. Even if it’s not given some specific special title, that doesn’t mean its function isn’t important. The pack couldn’t eat without someone doing what you do, which is something you can be proud of, and no one can take that away.”
Some jobs had more attention focused on them than others, and were deemed.. honorable or glamorous. There was some truth to that, Hawk thought, but that didn’t mean everyone else wasn’t important. Like Maxem, who was just as good and awesome as he was trying to convince the ghost to be.
Hawk let himself accept that with a smile, and a nod. ”Thank you, my friend. I do need to do that. But.. I also meant that.. I’m fortunate that no one else seems to have seen what I do, in Athena.” The ghost explained, biting back a troubled frown. ”She’s.. everything someone with sense would want. And then some.” Now, telling her that, would be something entirely different. The thought of it was both a little bit exciting, and terrifying. But the Knight surmised he would. Perhaps.. when that trip to the ocean, came around.
That was something to think about more, later. For now, he’d focus on the tree climbing lessons, grinning at Maxem’s comment. ”We wouldn’t want that. I don’t particularly fancy any broken limbs, myself,” Hawk agreed with a nod. Internally, though, an idea came to mind. And one he couldn’t wait to try, but carefully, of course.

I know I always come and go Maxem looked at Hawk, unable to keep the smile from forming. His friend definitely had a way of speaking that made you feel important. "Well, I don't think I can argue with you, I guess I am pretty important." He puffed up his chest-jokingly of course, he didn't truly believe he was that important, but he liked the idea of at least having some use to the pack, even if he was brushed off otherwise.
"Oh...." A look of understanding crossed his face when Hawk explained that he didn't see anyone else holding the same interest in Athena. "I think others are intimidated by her, she can be kinda scary sometimes," he explained, "she's always so serious. When we were younger she used to scare me," he admitted, "she acted like she was an adult before any of the rest of us thought about growing up." He explained, though considering the secrets that came out after the day her father and brother left, he understood now. "I wish you luck my friend, I would like to see something good come out of this. I always wanted to be an uncle." He joked, just wanting to see his friends reaction. Of course he and Athena weren't siblings, but he figured they were close enough that he could call himself the uncle of her future children.
The brute refocused his attention on teaching Hawk how to climb. "Being broken is not fun," he confirmed and looked over Hawk, "would you consider yourself agile? You have to have some kind of balance in order not to fall from the branches."

Hawk offered his friend an encouraging nod, when he said that he wouldn't argue. "You're important to me, too. I am proud to have you as a packmate," the ghost added, giving his friend a slight bump with a shoulder. Maxem was easy to get along with, loyal, and fun to be around. The best of the Vertok, whether he or the rest of the pack realized it or not. And it was shameful that they hadn't.
Equally so, for Athena. He could see how others might view her as scary or intimidating, but it was a rather unfortunate loss. "That makes sense, I suppose," he murmured, sadness evident in the words. He supposed that was to his benefit, though a part of him was loathed to admit that. But maybe, as Maxem suggested, something good could come of it. Athena deserved happiness, too. Maybe, hopefully, he could help her find that. And the last bit brought a wry smile to his face. "If it works out, I wouldn't mind.. granting you that." He'd always wanted children, too. To be able to love and pass on things to them, just as his family had. Maybe now that dream was closer to being attainable.
An outright laugh escaped Hawk however, with the last question his friend asked. "I'd.. consider myself agile, for my build, I think? Not like you, though," he spoke, eyes alight with amusement at that, as he gazed up towards the trees. "So I suppose there's only one way to find out if it's not good enough." Yes. He couldn't wait for this. It was not very often such a brilliant idea for a prank came to mind, and if it worked out, this would be one for the ages. Provided he didn't actually hurt himself in the process, that was.

I know I always come and go Maxem softened a little from Hawks kindness, perhaps he really had found a genuine friend. The idea warmed his heart that someone found him important enough to care for. "Well my friend, you are important to me too." He smiled with his genuine words, though part of him wondered if he would continue to be important if something grew between Hawk and Molo. For a moment he imagined those two creating their own family while he was left out on his own, even if he was the 'uncle' he didn't see himself finding someone who would love him in a way that would result in him being able to have a family of his own, something he would love to happen.
Though as Hawks tone changed his worries dissipated. "I'm sure everything will work out Hawk," he encouraged, "just don't forget about me when you're swept up in love." He teased with a grin.
Maxem perked up, following Hawks gaze towards the tree. "I guess so, we won't know until we try." He grinned. "Follow me then, I'll take you to the best trees to try climbing." He said cheerfully, running off into the forest.

The ghost flashed a grin back at his friend as the statement he’d offered was more or less turned back around, but it warmed him to know it. Hawk missed his family - his mother, father, and siblings. But to have friends here, and now.. maybe even someone to start his own family with, was beginning to make up for that.
Maxem seemed to have confidence that it would work out, between he and Athena, as well. It was a sense of optimism Hawk found himself agreeing with, surprisingly. The teasing remark prevented his thoughts from wandering any further though, and the ghost promptly sought to shake his head in a rather exaggerated way at that, looking positively aghast at the notion.
”Forget you? I could never. I’d probably need your help and ideas, for keeping kids entertained,” Hawk returned with a soft chuckle. Play was something he’d never been much good at, although he was looking forward to trying it. ”I could, actually.. maybe use your help with something else after this lesson, too.” The ghost added on. He’d thought a lot about it, how he wanted to tell Athena. He hoped to be alone for that moment, but there was still something he needed, for things to go as planned.
He watched for a moment as his friend promptly raced off into the forest, proclaiming he’d lead Hawk to the very best trees for climbing. The ghost hadn’t the time to respond and could really only grin to himself, hurrying off to catch up.
